You can install on external drive as long as it's not thunderbolt. I have it installed on my SSD 1TB Samsung T5 and running better than the internal drive. First, create a boot flash drive with the newest image. Then use disk utility to format the external drive to HFS+ mac journaled or it won't work. Then boot into recovery or internet recovery 'which ever works best for you' but try both if one doesn't work. Then install macOS on the external drive of choice. If, it doesn't boot and you're using APFS. Boot into Recovery mode again with the drive connected and in terminal type these things:

diskutil apfs list

diskutil apfs updatePreboot <your disk> ex. disk2s1 'listed in the first step' and should be the macintosh HD partition

Run macOS Installer for High Sierra and complete a full installation on the new drive. When finished, restart and choose Recovery (Command-R at startup). Launch Disk Utility from the Recovery.

if that doesn't work.. then reinstall macOS on the drive again using internet recovery to repair all the files and repeat the steps till it works.

I lost my internal hard drive to APFS before apple actually tested it. My internal drive is stuck on filevault 70% encrypted with no passwords working. Thanks Apple! I've been using UNIX and Linux for 15 plus years and never had issues like this last update to High Sierra 10.13 that you can't recover from at all.

I guess I trusted them way too much, because it's always worked and this time it's bit me. I sugguest UNIX or Linux next time and that's the way I'll be going. I hope the iPhone X doesn't suck or I'll be going android 4 lyfe next as well.
