Yes! This hint worked for me as well. That sound was driving me crazy.

Keep in mind that disabling nap means your CPU will run at full speed all the time. This means vastly increased CPU temperatures, which will probably cause more issues (and fan noise) than it's worth. When I uncheck nap on my iMac G5 my CPU temperature jumps between 9-11 degrees Celsius, hovering near 76 degrees Celsius as long as nap is turned off; not trivial by any extent.

Zowie, that's warm. Yes, there is a temperature increase in non-nap mode. In my case, the gap is the similar, but the overall temps are lower:
In 'normal' mode (no games or other high-CPU actions running), I see between 48C and 52C (118F and 124F) with nap enabled. When I disable nap, these jump to the 54C to 58C (131 and 138F) range. This is on a Dual G5 2.0GHz machine.
If you're worried about such things, there are a fair number of temperature probes apps and widgets out there to keep an eye on the temps. One such app is Hardware Monitor. On the FAQ page for that app, you'll find this statement:
'Note that all up-to-date Macintosh models automatically shut down or enter sleep mode if one of the readings exceeds a critical limit. For this reason it is impossible that your computer can be damaged in an overtemperature condition.
So I feel pretty good that no harm will come to my machine by disabling nap, but as always -- buyer beware, I won't be held responsible, etc..

In the interest of science (or at the very least, eliminating the irritating noise) I replaced the logic board, power supply and video card in my first gen 2.0DP (go AppleCare)..to no avail.
I was trying to avoid the Nap trick, because the idea of running my processor that hot all the time doesn't sit right with me. But, it looks like that's the only way.
What I've started to do is just turning napping off when the noise is unbearable, but mostly just living with it.

I have a first-gen Dual G5, and I've had the squeal, chirp, etc since day one.
I happens whenever there is 'something' going on..network activity, moving something on the screen, disk activity, etc.
Well, I also did a little research, and I found that if I set my processor speed to 'reduced' (Power Saver option), the squeal was virtually eliminated. Only the faintest of noises were still detectable.
If I also disabled the 'Allow Nap', the machine becomes completely quiet (well, relatively quiet anyway).

[sarcasm]
Even better, if you hold the power button pressed in for a few seconds, it'll go completely quiet!

Oh thank God. When watching TV with MythTV on my Mac, the computer was squealing like a banshee -- it wasn't some occational or ignorable issue.
Thanks.

For what its worth. I eliminated the chirping sound by running Folding@home. I had a friend suggest it and it worked. Also it s a great way to freak out the apple techs after they have replaced the PSU twice and still can't come up with a solution.

Possibly eliminate 'chirping' sounds from G5 CPUs

Definitely not just a G5 problem. Here on my Powerbook G4, under a certain range of (relatively light, but consistent) CPU load, the machine squeals and chirps. Solutions seem to be:
1). deactivate processor nap via CHUD - the noise instantly goes away
or
2). execute another program that pulls the CPU above this particular load range, or close down programs until load falls below the necessary range.
This is really irksome, and AppleCare doesn't seem to have any idea why. Interesting how nap would affect this noise.

I guess my question is, is it OK for the machine that it's chirping? I'm in an environment where the chirp doesn't bother me much, and since it sounds like turning off processor nap is going to make the box heat more I won't do that, but I just want to make sure the machine is going to last a while.

Possibly eliminate 'chirping' sounds from G5 CPUs

When I set processor performance to 'reduced' in energy saver, it cut down the noise by half, but I found that disabling CPU2 in the CHUD 'processor' panel got rid of the noise completely, even at highest processor performance.
I hope this does not mean something is wrong with my 212nd CPI
please advise

  • The situation. We have family in Minnesota (MacBook, hardwired 1.5Mbps), Missouri (iMac, hardwired 1.5Mbps), and Illinois (MacBook, wireless 10 Mbps). Since Christmas we have been ichatting with very few if any problems. All computers were Leopard.
The computers in Missouri and Illinois have been updated to Snow Leopard. Now all connections are essentially unusable. Audio just quits. Picture pixelates. Can't connect sometimes. The problems do not matter if the connection is one to one both Snow Leopard, three way with the one Leopard, or Snow Leopard to Leopard. Even when connection is established and working it degrades or just quits working.
We have tried all of the suggestions in the forums. Limited the ichat bandwidth to 500kbps (and we tried all the others settings also). Playing with Quicktime on the Leopard system. Etc.
It seems to us that iChat in Snow Leopard is fundamentally broken. At no time have we seen better video even with Snow Leopard to Snow Leopard.
Has anyone successfully and reliability used Snow Leopard's iChat to anything else?

    Hi,
I also can Video Chat from Snow to Leopard and Screen Share between the two.
Only on Friday evening I was chatting via Video to someone in Lesotho (South Africa) despite their appalling Internet speed.
I have iChat set to not Limit the bandwidth.
My G4 computer still on iChat 4 can also connect to Snow Leopard/iChat users.
I use UPnP in my Sagem 2405 Modem.
iChat 5 reports in the Connection Doctor > Network Status that this device is Port Restricted in the way it does NAT (iChat prefers Full Cone NAT according to iChat Help and the ? mark in Network Status)
We have known for a long time (Since iChat 2) that some routing devices can cause NAT issues for iChat
    http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page15.html#CertainBuddy
This can be further complicated if you are using two Connection Devices.
I am not saying that the transition was entirely smooth.
I had a few issue at first.
iChat 4 to iChat 5 seemed to work better at first.
Changing the Bandwidth to 500kbps seemed to be a step forward.
I have turned the Mac Firewall On then Off then On and finally Off.
It did seem that I got more success each time.
Although impossible it did seem as if iChat was learning how to do things again.
Currently I am Logged in to AIM on Port 443 with no SSL login.
My GoogleTalk ID is using SSL but other Jabber IDs are not.
Bandwidth, as I have said, is at NONE.
    Firewall is currently Off.
    Things I also looked at:-
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing Mine is Off but some say having it On now helps.
System Preferences > Date and Time had to change to my Time Zone which seemed to help (iChat does time code messages/Chats)
Repaired Permissions. Always a good coverall action.

  • I have an iSight with my Mac Mini and it freezes the system and makes a weird sound when I try to iChat with somebody. Any issues with these cameras and 10.5.2?

    Hello needsomeihelp
There are no issues with external iSight and 10.5.2 if both are working correctly. My external iSight works great on my 10.5.2 Mac.
You can use the suggestions in How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional to check your external iSight. The fixes for user-correctable external iSight problems are also in that page.
If iSight works correctly with any app in any user account you test, your problem lies elsewhere.
If your ONLY iSight problem is when using iChat, search or post in the iChat Support page or the Leopard > iChat and iChat Sharing Discussions Forum.

  • Hey guys sorry if i'm asking a stupid question but i just have to know. Will the new leopard iChat be compatible with MSN or Yahoo?

    Hi,
There is nothing said about the ssues that some find with Safari or Mail either.
There is nothing about fixes for even 3rd Party apps and conflicts some of those cause.
There is no news as to whether the iChat ports will be put in the Mac Firewall as a preset.
In fact a 2 hour speech promoting what is good with Apple is not going to state thing in a 'We Fixed this' type of way.

  • We got a new iMac, naturally with OS 10.5 for Intel. My qustion is how do you use Mac OS X Leopard ?
    1) Photoshop does not work.
Note: I mostly use ImageMagic as my photos (hobby/family) mostly need little correction, but once in a while you want to play with layers and selections!
    2)GIMPshop does not work
    Note: see 1.
3)Printing to OS X 10.3 shared printer does not work
Note: it works from 10.4 laptop and the command >cupsctl BrowseProtocols='cups dnssd'< does nothing to me.
    4)SogudiBeta does not work
Note: I know it works for some other people with my setup - but not for everyone and not for me.
    5) NeoOffice does not work
Note: I wanted to look at a file and grabbed PPC version from my laptop - it opens and stays at the Dock, but no windows/menues is shown. Is it so Rosetta supposed to work?
6)MatLab cannot find java, so the interface and debugging are broken. Graphics works, but X11 has to be freshly started along with MatLab.
Now, i am a power user, and I might solve at least some of this (and other) issues. But am I supposed to @#$% with or to use new computer? Now 10.5.4 looks more like a PublicBeta.
My problem is that before, I had only PPCs, so I have no suitable 10.4 disks to downgrade. Any thoughts?

    Thank you for the interest.
    1) I use (in 10.4) exaclty the one which does NOT work (in 10.5) - 7. At least I did not find a solution in google. I once solved the same problem with v6 (classic) which did not work in Classical environment of OS X. I found and removed accelerating plugins incompatible with Classics.
2)You see my needs - I am not a graphical designer! I just want to have convenient set of menus I am used to. So I want shop.app, and not just .app.
3)http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2275 - they know about it, but there solution does not work.
    4) it is a luck of an obvious functionality AND the drop of support to the Input Managers in 10.5 which drives me crazy.
5)When the same kind of problems appeared in OS9 -> OSX transition it was the extensions that were broken in Classics. Here I am confused as I do not understand what is broken under Rozetta and how to find it to disable.
6)There is only one thing you should know about MatLab - every next version cost to the user 1000$. Matlab R14 works, I know, but I have to use a remote license and update every 24 hours. But why should I break with my local R13 install I do not understand. I mean once again, like with Photoshop - I need a limited set of features, i could go for Octave (free) but it is again just to spend (=waste) time.
My point is, that the only added functionality is the video playback. It plainly works, and works better. The preserved functionality is Office (via Rosetta). The rest is either yet undeveloped or broken. Looks like we should first install Windows/Linux on a separate partition, then get used to it and then forget about OS X. One need no OS X to have Matlab/Firefox/GIMP.
The 10.5 box I got looked more like a web-enabled TVset and electronic typewriter. The other functionalities are to be built from scratch. Or downgrade to 10.4.

  • We have NFS server (CentOS 5 Linux).
ANON and Guest user can't connect to this server, only register users.
    We take instraction form http://nedos.net/2007/11/10/nfs-in-mac-os-105-leopard/
But we can't take access for NFS folders.
We made UID and GID for mac users some like linux server, but this don't work.

The media is the same for either 10 client or unlimited.
It is the serial number that makes the difference as to how many afp clients can be connected at the same time.
Also the 10 client restriction does not apply to web, email, ftp, and so forth. Only the concurrent file-sharing connections.

  • Hi,
We are developing an application running Web Server with php connected to mysql database. We are working now with Windows but wondering if we can move to Mac OS X Leopard. This server will not face internet and think we can use an iMac 3Ghz/500GB HD/4GB RAM, as server. We read we can use MAMP that comes with Apache, PHP and mySQL.
Can we use this configuration as server or you recommend buy MAC OS X Leopard Server and run over the iMac?. We are only sure the iMac is the only option we have available for the project.
Thanks for the help you can provide,

Thank you so much for your replies. In our actual server (Windows XP Pro) we also run XMail Server (to download messages from 3 mailboxes and redirect to several mailboxes depending on which account the message was received). Also our actual server works as file server for an accounting windows application sharing the same data with 3-5 computers.
The only additional applications are only to monitor the computer (HD used, Memory used, Processor used, Network Connections).
Still can use Leopard client as server or need Leopard Server?
    Thanks a lot,

  • I have been looking at ways of hosting my websites on my own Mac - how could I do this other than purchasing a copy of Mac OSX Snow Leopard Server?
I know you can turn on file sharing, but how can you display your sites?
Can you host more than one site with domain names and does this mean that you would be able to ditch web hosting with a company if the sites were hosted on Mac or Mac OSX Server?
Thanks for any help that anyone can give me with this.

The key appears to be turning on Web Sharing within Sys Pref's Sharing pane. Also, THIS Apple page says: +'Every Mac user has a Sites folder in the home directory automatically configured for local hosting within Apache.'+ And the following Apple doc says: +'You can also share a website on your computer by placing files in /Library/WebServer/Documents on your hard disk.'+:

  • We're setting up our Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, and in the process transferred files that had been stored and accessed from our Blackarmor NAS server over to the Mac. These files were all created on PC's and are Office Excel files, WordPerfect files or PDF's. When you look at the files on the Mac from the Mac and bring up Get Info for the affected file, it says that the file has Custom Access. The files that work properly don't have that configuration. I can access and open the files on some computers, but some users can't open the files from their computer even though they can see it. We're all using PC's and they get the Error: Access Denied-Contact your administrator--or something similar. I've seen on the web similar issues and it may have something to do with ACL permissions. I don't know enough about Mac OS to understand this, but what is baffling is that they can be opened from some PC's but not others, and all of the Users have the same accessibility to the files. Thanks for a solution!!

Oh, on the losing Internet, try this..
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers..

  • Purchased a used macbook pro with Mountain Lion. My old Mac runs Snow Leopard is backed up to Time machine. How do I register the operating system to me and how do I use Time Machine to move my files to the new used computer?

If you look at the User Tips tab, you will find a write up on just this subject:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4053
The subject of buying/selling a Mac is quite complicated. Here is a guide to the steps involved. It is from the Seller's point of view, but easily read the other way too:
    SELLING A MAC A
Internet Recovery, and Transferability of OS & iLife Apps
    Selling an Old Mac:
    • When selling an old Mac, the only OS that is legally transferable is the one that came preinstalled when the Mac was new. Selling a Mac with an upgraded OS isn't doing the new owner any favors. Attempting to do so will only result in headaches since the upgraded OS can't be registered by the new owner. If a clean install becomes necessary, they won't be able to do so and will be forced to install the original OS via Internet Recovery. Best to simply erase the drive and revert back to the original OS prior to selling any Mac.
    • Additionally, upgrading the OS on a Mac you intend to sell means that you are leaving personally identifiable information on the Mac since the only way to upgrade the OS involves using your own AppleID to download the upgrade from the App Store. So there will be traces of your info and user account left behind. Again, best to erase the drive and revert to the original OS via Internet Recovery.
    Internet Recovery:
    • In the event that the OS has been upgraded to a newer version (i.e. Lion to Mountain Lion), Internet Recovery will offer the version of the OS that originally came with the Mac. So while booting to the Recovery Disk will show Mountain Lion as available for reinstall since that is the current version running, Internet Recovery, on the other hand, will only show Lion available since that was the OS shipped with that particular Mac.
    • Though the Mac came with a particular version of Mac OS X, it appears that, when Internet Recovery is invoked, the most recent update of that version may be applied. (i.e. if the Mac originally came with 10.7.3, Internet Recovery may install a more recent update like 10.7.5)
    iLife Apps:
    • When the App Store is launched for the first time it will report that the iLife apps are available for the user to Accept under the Purchases section. The user will be required to enter their AppleID during the Acceptance process. From that point on the iLife apps will be tied to the AppleID used to Accept them. The user will be allowed to download the apps to other Macs they own if they wish using the same AppleID used to Accept them.
    • Once Accepted on the new Mac, the iLife apps can not be transferred to any future owner when the Mac is sold. Attempting to use an AppleID after the apps have already been accepted using a different AppleID will result in the App Store reporting 'These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID'.
    • It appears, however, that the iLife Apps do not automatically go to the first owner of the Mac. It's quite possible that the original owner, either by choice or neglect, never Accepted the iLife apps in the App Store. As a result, a future owner of the Mac may be able to successfully Accept the apps and retain them for themselves using their own AppleID. Bottom Line: Whoever Accepts the iLife apps first gets to keep them.
    SELLING A MAC B
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
    A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their 'fast saved' state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
    B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
    1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
    2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
    3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
    side.
    4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
    sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
    1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
    3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
    4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
    5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
    A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
    1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
    2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
    3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    4. Install OS X.
    5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
    6. Shutdown the computer.
    B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
    1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
    Utilities window appears.
    2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
    3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
    6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
    7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
    8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

  • HELP !
After I upgraded my operating system on my mac, (from Snow Leopard (10.6 ? ) to Mountain Lion (10.8.2), virtually ALL of my documents (recipes, update logs, information of untold things), have been denied to me with my Microsoft Word for Mac (which I have used since I purchased my mac in Aug.2008).
I now get a window that tells me 'You can't open the application 'Microsoft Word' because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.' (Needless to say, I cannot use Excel or anything else, either!)
Yet, I can still access them, fully (read and even print fro them), individually, by dragging a file into my PREVIEW program!
    What gives?
I am not a savvy programmer, nor do I confess to somehow being warned that this might happen when I upgraded my operating system.
Is there any reasonable (easier?) way to continue the use of these (to me) very important files? I only upgraded because I upgraded my iPhone to a 4S and wanted everything to conform to siimilar circumstances!
    What can I DO?

You need to upgrade your copy of MS Office. You're using a version that is 8 years old (at least). You can buy Office 2011, which will work. You could also get a copy of Pages from the App Store, which is cheaper and will open Word files (though not perfectly). Or you could get a free Office clone, like OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

I finally deleted the HP Color Laserjet 2600n from the printer list. When I attempted to re-install it, it doesn't find the printer at all. I haven't attempted to use the scanner. I also went to HP and downloaded the driver, no luck. I've restarted the computer multiple times, tried it with the printer on, and printer off, as well as pulled the usb cable in and out both ends. No error message on the printer display and it gpes through normal warmup until it shows the green light. I run software update and it shows no updates needed. Help!

When you press print the first window is pretty basic.
When you select print on that the next window should have an advanced option.
Click that and see if any of the options in the 3rd dropdown box allow you to specify the 'paper tray'.

In this new windaow, click 'advanced', go to 'paper type/quality' and choose ' best' and a photo paper. Then you will be able to choose a paper source (photo tray).
Once you have these settings, under presets do 'save as', and you can choose the preset instead of going to advanced.
If you have the latest software and drivers downloaded from HP, this will work.
