I have an older iMac (2011) that I'd like to setup as a Minecraft server for home usage. I won't make this public - it's just for those in my house to be able to play together w/o having to pay for Realms each month.
I'm running the latest OS X (10.11) and have never installed Java on my iMac. My understanding is that you need to have Java in order to run the server software. With Java being a dumpster fire of security risks I want to make sure I only download and install exactly what I need. What do I need?

Or should I download the latest version (Recommended Version 8 Update 73) of Java from java.com?
I don't want anything in the browser to run ANY Java applet this is solely for running a simple Minecraft server at home.. I don't know of Minecraft *requires* the legacy version of Java or not.. I guess that would determine which download I would need.
