Jdeveloper For Mac Sierra
JDeveloper doesn't remember my settings (open windows, recently opened files, preferences) when I restart it.
From time to time an error dialog pops up with a NullPointerException or IllegalArgumentException. Like just now when I was creating a new Application with a frame and I got an IllegalArgumentException: 'Reference dockable not found.' What is also annoying is that you cannot copy the error message/stack trace to paste it in here. Or is there a way to do so?
The biggest problem for me now that I'm trying to switch from Windows to Mac, is trying to operate the computer by keyboard. A lot of this applies in general and has nothing to do with JDeveloper. There seems to be a mismatch between the Java way of keyboard control and the Mac way, but I should think there must be a way around some of the problems. The one big disappointment that I have with the Mac, is that it is not possible to use the keyboard to go directly to a menu or component on screen. In Mac OS X it is possible to activate 'full keyboard access' and of course that's one of the first things I did. In theory this should make it possible to reach any part of the user interface from the keyboard. One annoying thing is that you have to go through all the previous menus or components to get to the one you want (tab, arrow keys). What's worse is that this feature doesn't work at all in some programs, even Apple's own, or it might work in part of a program but not in all dialog boxes etc. But then I thought Java to the rescue. Java programs should function like they do on all platforms. Even in the Aqua look and feel the mnemonics are shown and seemed to be working. So I thought at least in JDeveloper I would be in total control of the keyboard. But even here there are several problems.
- In most dialogs there is no initial focus, and so it is not possible to use the keyboard until I have set focus to the dialog using the mouse. Tab doesn't work. Neither does the keyboard shortcuts (mnemonics). I don't know if they are caused by JDeveloper or the Apple JVM.
- The shortcuts only seem work for AbstractButton subclasses (that have their own mnemonics), and not for components where the mnemonic belongs to the label that describes it (JLabel.setDisplayedMnemonic()).
- Even when the shortcuts work, there is another problem. When a text component has focus, often a special character is inserted into it as a result of the keyboard shortcut being triggered. This is of course related to the fact that the Alt shortcuts are not reserved for that purpose on the Mac since it has never had support for direct keyboard access to components. Instead it is used as a modifier to generate special characters. This is the mismatch that I mentioned, and I'm not sure if there is a way to avoid it. Is there?
- There are several keyboard related problems with code insight. The drop down list that displays suggestions cannot always be controlled from the keyboard. Sometimes when you use incremental search, the correct entry is probably selected, but you can't see it until you use the down arrow key to go to the next entry. Then it scrolls into view. Sometimes when you use incremental search, nothing happens. And sometimes another entry is selected (one that doesn't start with the letter you've typed).
- Sometimes when you activate 'argument insight' the editor loses keyboard focus and it's not possible to get it back without clicking in it
Why is there even a special version of JDeveloper for OS X? As a 100% Java application it should run unchanged on any platform. Or is it just the packaging and installation that is special?
I hope these things will be fixed soon so I can start to do some serious development on the Mac.
