You might experience issues such as these when you try to print from your Mac or print from your iOS device:

  1. Mac Os Printer Is Offline

Let’s make sure your printer uses the most updated driver–for the iX6820, that’s Canon’s iX6800 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver.16.40.1.0 (Mac). If you are not using this version, visit Canon’s support page for your printer series (the iX6800) and download and install that driver.

  • You can't see your printer from your device, or you get a message that no printers were found.
  • You get a message that software for your device isn't available.
  • You have some other printing issue related to the software on your Mac or iOS device.
  1. Dec 22, 2017  Make sure your printer works as expected in OS X. Launch System Preferences and go to the Sharing pane. On the Sharing pane, check the box for Printer Sharing, and (if you have more than one locally-connected printer) check the box for the specific printer you’d like to share.

For help with an error light or other error condition on the printer itself, check the printer's documentation or contact its manufacturer.

If your printer is AirPrint-enabled

If your printer is AirPrint-enabled for printing from your Mac or iOS device, just make sure that it's connected to the same Wi-Fi network used by the Mac or iOS device.1

If you still can't print, try any of these solutions:

  • Restart your Wi-Fi router. Then restart your printer.
  • Move your printer closer to your Wi-Fi router.
  • Update your printer and Wi-Fi router with the latest firmware from the manufacturer.2
  • Update the software for your Mac or iOS device.

If your printer isn't AirPrint-enabled

If you're printing from your Mac to a printer that isn't AirPrint-enabled:

  1. If your printer is connected to your Mac with a cable, disconnect the cable from your Mac.
  2. Turn off your printer.
  3. Get software updates for your Mac. Your Mac automatically downloads the latest software for most printers as part of these updates, so it's best not to install software from the printer manufacturer.
  4. Reconnect your printer to your Mac, if applicable.
  5. Turn on your printer and wait for it to finish starting up.
  6. Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners.
  7. Select your printer in the list of devices.

If your printer doesn't appear in the list of devices in Printers & Scanners preferences, click at the bottom of the list, then choose the command to add a printer or scanner. The window that opens offers more ways to find and add a printer, such as by IP address:

If you still can't print, and your printer is connected via Wi-Fi:

  • Restart your Wi-Fi router. Then restart your printer.
  • Move your printer closer to your Wi-Fi router.
  • Update your printer and Wi-Fi router with the latest firmware from the manufacturer.2

Reset the printing system

If the issue continues, reset the printing system on your Mac. This removes all printers and scanners—including their print jobs and settings—from Printers & Scanners preferences.

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners.
  2. While holding down the Control key on your keyboard, click anywhere in the list of devices.
  3. Choose “Reset printing system” from the menu that appears:

Remove printer drivers

If the issue continues on your Mac after resetting the printing system, take these final steps to remove any currently installed printer drivers. These steps don't apply to AirPrint printers.

  1. From the menu bar in the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder. Type /Library/Printers/ and click Go.
  2. The Printers folder opens. Choose Edit > Select All, which selects all items in the Printers folder.
  3. Choose File > New Folder with Selection, which puts all of the selected items into a new folder named New Folder With Items. To save storage space, you can delete this folder.

If the issue continues, contact the printer manufacturer for support.

1. In corporate environments, DNS records can be configured to allow AirPrint-enabled printers to appear across other networks instead of just the network used by the device you're printing from. You can also use configuration profiles in iOS to set up AirPrint printers.

2. Firmware updates—such as for AirPort base stations—update the software on the printer or router, not the software on your Mac or iOS device. If the latest firmware from the manufacturer is several years old, the manufacturer might have stopped supporting or updating your device. If so, you might need a more up-to-date printer or router.

Coincidentally, I recently had the need to add and remove printers to a lab full of Macs. I sure wish I'd known about these commands. But I thought I'd share my method, which is completely different, but which also works well, and is pretty easy.
1. Set up one system with all printers, exactly as you'll want them on the other machines.
2. Copy the entire /etc/cups folder to the other machines.
3. Restart the cups daemon (as root): killall -HUP cupsd
4. (Optional) If you have network users, restart Directory Services (as root): killall DirectoryService
That should do it.
Also, the command I use to kill all print jobs is: cancel -a -
-systemsboy

If you're using a whole lab of machines, you may want to try and use scripting to configure the machine's printers. I found this set of scripts a while ago and modified it as needed for our environment. I can now configure any number macs' printer configurations on the fly without difficulty. Additionally, in regards to clearing printer queues, the way I do that to be 100% sure that it's really going to do it is to add a LoginHook to each machine so that every time a user logs in, the following script is run, which clears out the CUPS server's queues and restarts it. Works brilliantly, and haven't had a report of a blocked print queue on a mac since :-).
Yes, I later found that the crude script I wrote above doesnt' quite work when it processes unexpected input, eg when printer queues are paused. Then I discovered the cancel -a command which makes it redundant anyway. mdb - Ta! I've been looking into scripts. I will probably whip up a LogoutHook to clear jobs when users are finished whatever they're doing and logout.
Thanks for the tip. I've found that if you use the -D flag (description), you can have a name that includes spaces. If the description is set, then the printer will show up in OS X with that name instead of the formal name. I've revised the the script to include checking for the printer prior adding, and to include a few HP LaserJet print options as well. Hope this helps.

Woohoo! This is great! I was able to research the correct options for my Canon machines via lpoptions -v .. and I'm now a printer-configuring machine. :-)

I may have spoken a bit too soon. My setup works perfectly with this script except for
lpoptions -d 'MyCopier' -o EFFinisher='Finisher'
The machines in question are Canon 8070 copiers with the ImagePASS S1 RIP, which supports an option of 'Finisher' for the K1 finisher unit. Although this is what shows up when you read the options from a manual configuration (via Printer Utility), it doesn't work the other way: setting it up from the command line doesn't show the finisher options in the Print dialog. :-(

Hi..thanks so much for this tip. I still haven't found a way to set the new printer as the user's default. I thought perhaps the lpadmin -d flag would do it, but (at least) the Printer Setup Utility doesn't think the default has changed. Any ideas? Thanks again.

To set a default printer, add the following line to the above script after the lpadmin command:
# Set Printer as Default
lpoptions -d '${prName}'

FYI : PrinterSetup supports setting a default printer. However if you would like to set the default printer using the command line with a tool such as ARD then the following command should help :

$ lpoptions -d cupsqueuename

Best mac os x software. Mar 29, 2017  I currently have a complex Access 2007 database that I'd like to duplicate so it can be run on a mac, without using parallels and windows. It needs to be able to be encrypted (AES 256 bit preferred, suggestions welcome), and be able to be distributed in a run-time format, for sale to users. I'm looking for a database visualization tool for OS X. MySQL Workbench looks promising, but the binaries provided are Intel only and I haven't been able to get the source to compile on PowerPC yet. IDatabase is the Mac app that simplifies the creation of databases, inventories, collections and lists of items. IDatabase is the best there is for those who want to manage, store and quickly find any information for their passions and for everyday work.
