Oct 27, 2009  NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices are a popular alternative to providing centralized file services to smaller environments. This includes devices such as the Seagate BlackArmor, the DroboShare NAS and the Netgear ReadyNAS Pro. These are inexpensive as compared to an actual server, they require less management and they often come with some pretty compelling features. The applications included in OS X are all the same version, so there should not be a problem as long as the versions of OS X match. If you do not have a backup or another Mac available. I backup my data fairly reliably but three times I have been put into a situation where when the backup was needed the backup program failed and I was told the software was no longer being supported. The last time was in 2012 with the HP backup software that came bundled with my computer.

For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:

1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;

2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is

used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine

requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the

drive being backed up.

Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

Jan 15, 2018  Aperture runs under High Sierra but it has issues. It's having more trouble importing photos than it did under Sierra. It usually claims that there are no photos on my camera the first time I try to import. If I've got more than a couple of hundred photos to import it won't see them all. Sep 20, 2016  As soon as the last field is deleted, Aperture on macOS Sierra will work again as it should (and has yet running El Capitan). There is one more thing;-) if you use smart albums AND have some custom metadata fields selected, please be sure to change your settings respectively to the „new home“ of your custom metadata field data. Aperture equivalent for macos sierra. Oct 24, 2019  For the strongest security and latest features, find out whether you can upgrade to macOS Catalina, the latest version of the Mac operating system. If you still need macOS Sierra, use this link: Download macOS Sierra. A file named InstallOS.dmg will download to your Mac. Jan 06, 2019  Hello. I have continued using aperture as I didn't like the organization and navigation of Photos initially. But given that Aperture is no longer updated or supported, I suppose I should switch. I shoot about once a month so have a fair number of photos to store and organize. I don't do a lot of.

Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.

Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;

All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
