At the same time, Excel 2008's lack of Visual Basic support is a serious flaw that shafts power users. Still, Entourage's update may motivate more businesses to use Office on a Mac. Replied on April 4, 2013. Visual basic does not work in Excel 2008. There is no workaround. Additionally, the datepicker xlam is an active x control which will not work in any mac version. If you want to use VBA in Excel for Mac you will have to upgrade to Excel 2011. There are several date picker routines that MAY work in Excel 2011, but that is not one of them.

Office 2016 for Mac is sandboxed
Unlike other versions of Office apps that support VBA, Office 2016 for Mac apps are sandboxed.
Sandboxing restricts the apps from accessing resources outside the app container. This affects any add-ins or macros that involve file access or communication across processes. You can minimize the effects of sandboxing by using the new commands described in the following section.

I received an older MacBook Pro 5,1 (MacBook Pro 15” Unibody, Late 2008 / Early 2009), but it came without a hard drive. I installed Mountain Lion from DVD, then updated to El Capitan, which is the latest version of macOS supported by this laptop. I am now unable to install Keynote—or any iWork app—because they all require macOS Sierra.
