One of the primary reasons for the version 4.2 update, was to make several new Bible versions available, such as ESV, HCSB, Message & Amplified, and to remove the restrictions on the number of modules that can be loaded at any one time. The program was also updated so, upon launch, it automatically checks to see if a new release is available and, if so, notifies you. Because we prepay the royalties for ESV, HCSB, NKJV & Message, we only make them available on our version 4.2 (or later) CDs. To get these newer translations, you must buy a CD containing them. The Starter Pack (65.7 MB) is a simplified Installer package containing the Online Bible application, King James Version Bible, Thayer's Greek Lexicon, Brown Driver Briggs Hebrew Lexicon, Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, Clarke's commentary on the Bible and Smith's Bible dictionary.

Below, grouped according to their principal language, is a listing of the modules available for use with the Online Bible for the Macintosh. Each language is subdivided by module type—for example: Bibles, Cross References, Lexicons, Notes (Commentaries), Topics (Apocrypha) and/or Topics (Books).
A Notes module contains the contents of a commentary or a set of user notes, and each individual note is always directly associated with a particular Bible verse. When the default Note set contains a comment for a particular verse, an asterisk appears next to that verse number in every Bible window, and you can click on that asterisk to open and read that note. Topics, on the other hand, contain a book or set of loosely related articles. A Topic is never associated with a specific verse—although it may contain one or more Bible references that can be clicked on to open a window allowing you to view a referenced passage—, but Topics are instead divided up by topic name. They typically contain a table of contents detailing the topics in the topic set.

The following are the minimum system requirements for the Online Bible:
- A Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4 or G5 processor, or an Intel processor.
- The Online Bible application can run on Mac OS X version 10.4 or later, but the installer requires an Intel-based Macintosh computer, or a PowerPC-based computer running Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later.
- At least 512 MB of free hard disk space for installation.
- 512 MB of random-access memory (RAM) installed.
- CD-ROM drive (required for installation using the Classic or Deluxe CDs). For those without an optical drive, we can supply the Classic or Deluxe CDs on a USB flash drive for an addition fee.
If you are having any kind of issue with any version of the Online Bible for the Mac prior to v.4.1, you should (assuming your system meets the minimum requirements) update to the latest version; it is free. Of course, anyone having any kind of issue may want to review these commonly asked questions to see if one of them has the answer to your problem. (The questions shown here are more up to date than those contained in the included Online Bible Help.)
- Q: Will there be a version of the Online Bible for the iPad? iPhone/iPod-Touch? iOS?
A: There is now a version available for iOS and Android.
- Q: Do you have a module for the New English Translation? Or, the Peshitta Syriac New Testament? Or, <name your favorite translation, commentary, etc.>?
A: This webpage should be considered the authoritative list of the currently available modules for the Online Bible for the Mac. It is one of our goals to have the Online Bible for the Mac ultimately use the same modules (and module format) as the Online Bible for Windows. The future of the Online Bible for the Mac could certainly use your continued prayer!
At the present time we have a new version of our Universal (Windows/Macintosh/Linux) DVD that has all the material from our Windows DVD but runs under an emulator called Wine on Macintoshes running Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or higher. This version is not as intuitive as our Mac native programming (which is what this webpage supports) but does have the benefit of including additional material.
- Q: I purchased one of the CDs and I thought it came with some particular module listed on this webpage, however, after I ran the Installer, I could not find the module within the Online Bible.
A: This webpage can be considered an authoritative list of the currently available modules for the Online Bible for the Mac. However, the default installation does not install all of the modules from a particular CD to your hard drive; it only installs the most popular modules.
To install (or reinstall) any module (or the whole app), rerun the Online Bible Installer and click the Customize button in the bottom left corner of the Installation Type pane. From the resulting list, choose only those modules you want to install/reinstall and then click the Install button. (It doesn’t hurt to run the Installer multiple times, but it is something of a waste of time to reinstall something that is already installed—unless, of course, you are having issues with that module and you are trying to fix the issues by reinstalling it.)
- Q: How do I use <some feature>? When I use <some feature> I cannot get it to do what I want. What am I doing wrong?
A: Have you tried to solve your problem(s) using the Online Bible Help (available via the Online Bible’s Help menu)? Although the first two chapters of the Online Bible Help—an Introduction and a Tutorial—are geared toward getting new users started with the Online Bible for the Mac, the Online Bible Help also contains chapters that offer assistance for every command in every menu of the Online Bible, including the contextual menus and the Toolbar. The Online Bible Help is also searchable!
If you hope to become proficient with the Online Bible, we highly recommend you spend some time reading its Help documentation. Of course, if you do not find an answer to your question in the Online Bible Help, feel free to contact us by sending an e-mail message to the support address shown in the Support section of this page.
- Q: I really miss the old F-key where, when working on a document in another application, I could type a few keystrokes and get a dialog box that allowed me to insert Bible verses by specifying a passage. Can this still be done?
A: Although the old fashioned F-keys went away with the introduction of Mac OS X, the ability to easily Copy Bible Verses into documents that are open in other applications *is* still available. This functionality now comes via each application’s Services submenu—a submenu many Mac users tend to overlook. The Services submenu is always in the Application menu (i.e., the menu named after the frontmost application, just right of the Apple menu). The Copy Bible Verses command will typically have Cmd-7 as its keyboard equivalent, but its availability depends on whether or not the frontmost application can accept text from the Copy Bible Verses command.
There is also, however, another caveat: In some versions of the Mac OS, you may have to enable this functionality before you see it. (Installing a new version of the Mac OS may also, contrary to your will, disable this functionality.) The easiest way to enable this service is to, from any Services submenu, choose “Services Preferences”. This will open the Keyboard System Preferences. In the resulting window, on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion)—other versions of the Mac OS may differ slightly—, you then select Services on the left, and in the list on the right, locate and place a checkmark next to “Copy Bible Verses” (which will be in the “Text” subsection). The “Copy Bible Verses” command should then appear in the Services submenu of every application that knows how to interact with it. If in doubt, look in TextEdit. Because TextEdit knows how to accept verses from the Copy Bible Verses command, TextEdit will list “Copy Bible Verses” in its Services submenu when you have that command enabled.
Please note, however, some Microsoft products—especially older ones—do not appear to know how to work with the Services submenu.
- Q: I upgraded my Mac (or my Mac operating system) and now, when I try to open the Online Bible, it crashes as soon as I launch it. How do I correct this?
A: You have very likely encountered a known problem related to the older way in which the Online Bible reads and writes its preferences. The solution to this problem is to throw away your existing Online Bible preference files. Your Online Bible preference files are located at ~/Library/Preferences/, where “~” means “your Home folder.” They are titled: “Online Bible Prefs” and “Online Bible Winds”. On Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) and later, to open your Library folder, hold down the Option key while using the Go menu in the Finder. (The Option key makes the Library menu command appear.)
- Q: I am running version 4.x of the Deluxe (or Classic) Online Bible, however, I see there is a newer version available. Should I upgrade? And what is the cheapest/best way to do so?
A: Newer versions always fix known bugs in older versions and often introduce new features. And because the latest version is always (freely) available from our website, it is a good idea to keep current (assuming your system meets the minimum requirements for the latest version.) You can bring yourself up to date by downloading the Starter Pack from above. Once it is downloaded, open it and double click the Installer package. This will launch the pre-installer, which will in turn launch the installer. Simply follow the onscreen instructions.
Installing the latest Starter Pack does *not* remove older modules from any already existing Online Bible folder (in your Applications folder), therefore you will *not* lose modules from a previous Classic or Deluxe installation by installing a newer version of the Starter Pack over your older version. However, neither does the Starter Pack add newer versions (e.g. ESV, HCSB, NKJV or Message). As shown above, the Starter Pack comes with only the KJV. Those other versions are only available (royalty paid) on our CDs. To get these newer translations you must buy one of the (version 4.2 or later) CDs.
- Q: I have been running the Online Bible version 3.x for years, and I just purchased a new Mac. What is the best way to proceed?
A: Older versions of the Online Bible—prior to v.4.1.x—are known to crash on Snow Leopard and Lion. However, the latest version of the Online Bible for the Mac is always (freely) available from our website.
If you have a version 3.x CD, the best way to proceed is to:
- Download the (free) Starter Pack from our website.
- Once you have the Starter Pack downloaded, open it and double click the Installer package. This will launch the pre-installer, which will in turn launch the installer. Follow the onscreen instructions.
- Once the Installer has finished, you will find a folder named Online Bible in your Applications folder. Next, insert your v.3.x CD, and open it. You will see several folders that have language names (including one named Ancient). Open any and all of these language folders that you wish, and manually drag the module folders you desire from these folders (on the CD) into the new Online Bible folder in your Applications folder. (Each module folder must be directly in the same folder that the Online Bible application is in. When the Online Bible application starts up, it looks for modules that are in the same folder it is in.) You do **not** want to copy anything from the Locked, Share, Extras, Desktop, or Trash folders (on the v.3.x CD), nor do you want to copy any of the other non-folder items. The only things on the version 3.x CD that still have value with version 4.x are the contents of the various language folders—and they are actually the majority of the contents of the CD).
- Next, you may encounter a known problem mentioned in a previous question. The solution to the known problem is to throw away your old Online Bible preference files. Consult the previous question for directions on how to do this.
- You will probably want to make a backup of the Starter Pack just in case you need to reinstall again at some future date. (You already have a back up of the various modules in the form of your v.3.x CD.
- Q: I have a version of the Online Bible for Mac prior to version 3.0, and I cannot get my modules to work with the latest software. Is there any hope?
A: The format for modules changed between version 2.x and version 3.0, and the newer software cannot read the older format. - Q: The Online Bible for the Mac is known to have issues running on macOS 10.13.x (High Sierra). What are they and what can I do?
A: The following issues have been reported when running the Online Bible on macOS 10.13.x (High Sierra):
- Restarting your Mac causes the operating system to be unable to read your Online Bible Preference settings (such as font and font size for each Bible module). (If you do not shutdown or restart your machine, however, the Preferences appear to be properly saved when quitting and relaunching the app; it is the restart that causes the OS difficulties, forcing you to reset your preferences.)
- Consistently, after you restart your computer, when you open the Online Bible, the Online Bible re-asks if you would like to use the CD or hard disk. (It is trivial to always choose to use the hard disk, but the fact that it does not remember after a restart is annoying.)
- Throughout the program, those menus that list the various Bible, Topic, and Note modules no longer appear in alphabetic order (although their non-alphabetic order does appear to remain consistent for a given machine).
All these issues seem related to an important new feature in High Sierra, viz., Apple’s new APFS file system. Unfortunately, if your Mac has a FlashDrive or an SSD (Solid State Drive), Apple does not give you a choice when you update to High Sierra and they automatically upgrade your drive’s file system to APFS. Old fashioned hard drives and Fusion Drives do not get upgraded automatically (as of January 2018).
What can be done? For now, avoid Apple’s APFS file system. (Our’s is not the only software having issues.)
If you have a FlashDrive or an SSD, when you upgrade to High Sierra you will begin seeing these issues with the Online Bible; we know of no way to avoid them. If you do not want these problems, do not upgrade to High Sierra. If you have already upgraded to High Sierra, we know of no way to go back; you will have to learn to live with these issues in the Online Bible; e.g., minimizing restarts will help.
If you have an old fashioned hard drive or Fusion Drive, you can (as of January 2018) safely upgrade to High Sierra but there is no way to predict whether Apple will force the APFS file system on you later or not. (We do not anticipate Apple easily discarding something they have spent so much money developing. Whether Apple intends to fix the cause of these issues is also unknown.) We recommend caution if you hope to keep using the Online Bible without these issues.
- Q: When I attempt to run the Online Bible Installer, the Online Bible Pre-Installer fails. As directed, I contacted Online Bible for support and they pointed me to this FAQ to work around the failure.
A: Because the Pre-Installer fails on your system (for reason(s) we have been unable to duplicate on ours), you must manually perform what the Pre-Installer was designed to do. The Pre-Installer accomplishes two tasks:
- It locates and hides (by compressing them) every copy of the “Online Bible.app” visible to your computer, and
- It then launches the actual Online Bible Installer.
The first task is necessary because the Installer will overwrite the first copy of the app it finds, regardless of where it finds it (even if it is in the Trash), making it unpredictable to locate the newly installed app.
You must therefore manually search—use the Finder’s File>Find command—your computer for all copies of the “Online Bible.app”. If you find any copies and they are on an external drive, you can eject the drive to hide them; or you can compress them and move the original to the Trash (and then empty the Trash).
Once there are no more uncompressed copies of the app installed on your computer, you should then launch the Installer app using the Online Bible installer package. Follow these steps to do that:
- Insert the Online Bible installer CD/thumbdrive, thereby causing it to mount on your desktop. (If you downloaded the Starter Pack from our website, double clicking the downloaded disk image will cause it to mount its disk on the desktop.) Mounting the disk should also open the Online Bible installer window making visible both the “Online Bible Installer.app” and “ReadMe.rtf” files (as shown below).
- Launch the Terminal app. The Terminal app is provided by Apple and is located in the Utilities folder, which is in the Applications folder. (In our illustrations here, the Terminal window is yellow; yours may be white or some other color.)
- In the Terminal window, type: ‘cd ’ (i.e., ‘c’ ‘d’ <space>). (This is the beginning of the Change Directory command.)
- Then, with the mouse, drag the disk icon from the title bar of the Online Bible installer window onto the Terminal window as shown here. The Terminal window will signal it is ready to receive your drop by placing a blue outline around the inside of the Terminal window (as shown). That is the time to release the mouse button. This drag-n-drop operation inserts the path to the Online Bible installer window after the previously typed ‘cd ’ (completing the Change Directory command).
- Now, ensure the Terminal window is still frontmost (if not, click on it to bring it to the front) and then press the Return key. This will execute the Change Directory command in the Terminal, and the cursor will go to a new line. Your windows should look something like this:
- Next, in Terminal, type ‘open .Hidden’ (i.e., ‘open’ <space> <period character> ‘Hidden’ [with an uppercase ‘H’]) and then press the Return key. This will open a (normally hidden) folder on the Online Bible installation disk, which contains two items:
- Finally, double click the “OLB Installer.mpkg” item in the window and follow the Installer’s instructions normally.
- Please note: Before ejecting the Online Bible installation disk, you will have to Quit Terminal. (Terminal is holding onto the disk and quitting Terminal causes it to release the disk.)
Caveat Emptor
Some of the material for use with the Online Bible for the Mac is of an interpretive nature. As such, you may or may not agree with the views expressed. You are encouraged to “prove all things” and “hold fast that which is good.” 1Th 5:21. Let the Scriptures be your guide in this matter. “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isa 8:20.

You may share the Starter Pack and other downloadable modules with other Mac users. However, Online Bible modules may not be shared nor used with other Bible study programs—including the Online Bible for Windows.
